Health Assessments

Know where you stand — before it matters.

Regular health checks pick up developing issues early, when they're easiest to treat. Our assessments combine a thorough clinical review with the tests that matter most for your age and history.

Medical Assessments

A focused clinical review for a specific purpose, for example pre-employment checks, or return-to-work reports, carried out by a GP and provided in writing.

Health Screening (Well Man / Well Woman)

A comprehensive one-hour "health MOT": height, weight, waist/hip ratio, blood pressure and ECG, body composition analysis, a general physical examination, and blood and urine testing covering full blood count, kidney and liver function, cholesterol and lipid profile, thyroid function, and glucose control. Results are reviewed by our GP with a full written report.

Additional information

Before you arrive at clinic you should complete the health questionnaire that will have been sent to you. This helps us to understand your background health, medical conditions and current treatments. If you are unsure of any questions, don't worry — we will run through it all during your health screening.

Your appointment will take 1 hour with the doctor. She will check your weight, height, and measure your waist and hips. Your blood pressure will be taken and a heart tracing (ECG). While you are comfy on the couch, we do another set of tests called a body stat. This is painless and involves adhesive tabs on your wrists and ankles and gives useful information on body composition, which is useful for giving dietary advice. There is a general physical examination and for men, the option of a testicular examination and for women, a breast exam. These are not compulsory, and if you do not feel comfortable having these examinations, just let Dr O'Brien know and she can talk you through self-examination instead.

Finally, we take a blood sample and test your urine. The bloods we test for include:

  • Full blood count
  • Kidney and liver function
  • Cholesterol and lipid profile
  • Thyroid function
  • Glucose control — random glucose and HbA1c, which looks at longer-term control
  • PSA for men and Ca 125 for women

If there are any other tests or investigations you are interested in, please feel free to discuss this during the consultation.

What happens next?

Your results will be received and reviewed by Dr O'Brien within 2–3 working days. If there is a significant result, she will ring you directly to discuss. For all other results, she will complete a detailed report and you should receive this within 14 days. Once you have received your report, we recommend you read it through, and if you are unsure of anything, you can email Dr O'Brien with any queries. If you prefer to discuss things further face to face, this can be arranged, however it is not included in the health assessment package.

In patients' words

I left the surgery feeling as though Dr O'Brien had really listened and understood my problems. I was better informed on the actions I needed to take and the options available to resolve my case.
