Private GP vs NHS GP: What's Actually Different?

If you're considering seeing a private GP for the first time, you've probably got one question underneath all the others: is this actually going to be different, or am I just paying for the same thing faster?

The honest answer is a bit of both — and it's worth understanding clearly before you decide.

What stays exactly the same

A private GP in the UK is still a fully qualified doctor, trained to the same standard, held to the same professional regulation (GMC registration), and bound by the same clinical guidelines as an NHS GP. Going private doesn't mean lower standards or "alternative" medicine — it's the same medicine, delivered differently.

What actually changes

The differences are mostly about time and access, not clinical quality:

  • Appointment length. NHS GP appointments are typically around 10 minutes. Private appointments are usually 15–60 minutes, depending on what you book — enough time to properly discuss more than one issue without feeling rushed.
  • Waiting times. Private appointments are often available same-day or within a few days, rather than waiting one to several weeks.
  • Continuity. You're more likely to see the same GP each time, rather than whoever happens to be available — which matters for anything ongoing, or anything you'd rather not re-explain from scratch.
  • Access to extras. Private clinics often offer things the NHS doesn't routinely provide — comprehensive health screening, certain travel or occupational health checks, and unhurried space to discuss preventative health rather than just the immediate problem.

What private care doesn't replace

Private GP care isn't a substitute for emergency services, and it doesn't sit outside the wider NHS system — referrals for specialist care, certain tests, and prescriptions often still run through the same pathways either way. It's best thought of as a complement to the NHS, not a replacement for it: most people who see a private GP still rely on the NHS for the things it does well, and choose private care specifically for the time and access it offers.

Why people choose it

In practice, the people who find private GP care worthwhile tend to have one of a few things in common: they want a same-day answer rather than a two-week wait, they have several things to discuss and don't want to feel rushed through them, they want an ongoing relationship with one doctor rather than whoever's on the rota, or they want a proper preventative health check rather than only being seen when something's already wrong.

How this works at Braidburn Health

At Braidburn Health, every GP appointment is with Dr Zahrine O'Brien directly — not a rotating team — with appointment lengths from 15 minutes for a quick follow-up up to a full hour when there's more to cover. The aim isn't to replace your NHS GP, but to give you somewhere to go when time, access, or continuity matter more than they currently allow for.
